New Labels
Many of you have noticed the new shelf labels, so we thought this would be a good time to explain. Every shelf label of every product in the store now bears multiple icons showing which of the most common food allergens each contains: dairy, egg, wheat, gluten, soy, fish, shell fish, tree nuts, rice and corn.
We use no peanut icon, because Free From Market is a peanut-free zone and gluten is restricted to a mere five clearly marked items. This system is in place for foods of course, but also for tooth pastes, lip balms, supplements, cleaners, etc. — all places where allergens hide.
Label icons are meant to be a convenient guide only, and while we make every effort to assure that you have accurate information, beware that manufacturers often change recipes and sometimes even mislabel their own products. If you have a food allergy or intolerance, our system does not relieve you of reading every product label every time you make a purchase, and once again every time you use or consume it. If ever you notice a mislabeled product, or a misapplied icon in the store, please tell us as soon as possible.

Have you Discovered Chia?
Chia seed is one of the most powerful, functional, and nutritious super foods in the world, and it is gluten free. It is an excellent source of fiber, packed with antioxidants, protein, vitamins and minerals, and is the richest known plant source of omega-3. One Tbsp of Nature’s Answer Chia Meal contains 2348 mg of Omega 3 fatty acids - that is approximately twice the nutritional density of flax oil and four times that of cod liver oil! Studies have shown that balancing one’s ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 to approximately 1::2 protects against inflammation and heart disease. Chia is available as a flour, seed, meal and breakfast cereal.
Ground Breaking Food Allergy Study
The Children’s Memorial Food Allergy Study in Chicago is a long term family-based study of biological parents and at least one food allergic child (age 0-21 years). The goal of the study is to answer fundamental questions that have never been systematically studied on a large scale: What is the cause of food allergy? How can food allergy be predicted and prevented? Are there alternative or better treatments for food allergy? This is the largest genetic study of food allergy ever and the answers to these basic questions will point toward their goal, which is nothing less that a cure for food allergy.
Each family member that participates receives a $25 gift card to Target, free parking, additional gift card(s) to cover travel expenses and free blood RAST screening for allergies. The test alone costs several hundreds of dollars, and later you can tell your kids that you did everything possible to cure their food allergy. Since inception the study has enrolled 1000 families. An additional 500 families are needed in order to secure additional NIH funding for this single largest genetic study of food allergy. For more information, visit (www.childrensmrc.org/allergy), call 1-888-573-1833 or e-mail to allergystudy@childrensmemorial.org. They need your help.
