A Note from Peter and Shelly DeRousse
We wanted to thank everyone who came out to make last Saturday’s grand opening of Free From Market a success. Our friends and family have been a great source of support and we have been deeply humbled by the tremendous help that has come from the community, often from strangers. Free From Market was born of frustration trying to feed and care for our two severely allergic kids. We knew too many others like us who spent their weekends going to too many stores and having to settle for too few options, because the personal understanding was not really there. Witnessing a child in anaphylaxis has a way of focusing attention on what matters: taking peoples’ allergies dead seriously by offering tools for strict avoidance, serving the community and finding new options and strategies for optimum health. We are constantly improving on those goals, new products are coming in daily and new bridges being built.
This is your store, so help us to make it everything you need in an allergy free place. Come back and tell us how we are doing.

Another Reason to Examine Your Vitamin D Intake
There is more evidence now that Vitamin D insufficiency is linked to asthma severity, according to the results of a study reported in the May 1, 2009 issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Noting that “Maternal vitamin D intake during pregnancy has been inversely associated with asthma symptoms in early childhood,” Erick Forno, one of the study’s authors, decided to see if there was a relationship between vitamin D levels and asthma in early childhood. Researchers measured levels 25-hydroxyvitamin D (common vit. D) and markers of allergy and asthma severity among 616 Costa Rican children, ages 6-14. The study found that Vitamin D was insufficient (< 30 ng/mL) in 26% (175) of the children with asthma, and that Vitamin D levels were inversely associated with total IgE (immunoglobulin E) and eosinophil counts. “In these children, lower vitamin D levels are associated with increased markers of allergy and asthma severity.”
Did You Know …
“Allergy March” is physician argot that is often unfamiliar even to those with diagnosed allergies. It refers to a common progression in allergic disease that is statistically predictable among those who show the early sign of eczema. Usually eczema will appear shortly after birth, then gastrointestinal diseases as a child approaches age two, and finally asthma and other upper respiratory diseases starting at age three and lasting through young adulthood. Currently, the only way to derail allergy march is through early diagnosis and strict avoidance of what causes reactions.
