Allergy March (again)
“Allergy March” or “Atopic March” is a statistically predictable progression of allergic disease from eczema, typically at age 6 mos., to food allergies and gastrointestinal problems at age 1-2, to asthma by age 3. An amazing 40% of children with eczema in infancy develop asthma by age 3. This according to a 2002 double-blind, placebo controlled study of 817 infants. The percentage approaches 60% for infants who are also sensitive to grasses and dust mite residue. As the disease migrates from skin to the gut to lungs, parents scramble to address individual symptoms, generally unaware that they are all connected. There is no known cure for allergy march, and only one certain treatment for allergy: discover the triggers and avoid them. Early and reliable testing with an allergist is a must if you have suspicions, as is looking beyond the obvious symptom to the whole allergic disease. So here is a sound strategy; anticipate allergy march and block the triggers before your child’s body has learned to be hypersensitive. We are already advised to delay introducing particularly reactive foods, like nuts and eggs. Likewise, if your child could number in the 40-60%, shut down the environmental triggers before they become aggressive: filter the air, encase the mattresses, clean the ducts, change the filters and use simple non-chemical cleaners throughout the house. The EPA already estimates that the air within the average U.S. household is 2-3 times more polluted that the air outdoors. The worst that can happen is that everyone feels better.
Good News for Kids on Restricted Diets! Illinois School Personnel to Get Universal Food Allergy Training
Help is on the way in managing your child’s food allergies at school. Shelly DeRousse, co-founder of POCHA, s/w Cook and co-owner of Free From Market, will serve on a distinguished group of food allergy advocates, school board and public health administrators to develop food allergy protocols that all Illinois State Schools will follow beginning in 2011. The guidelines are mandated as part of a law that passed the IL legislature in August, 2009, HB 281. It will require: 1) education and training for school personnel who interact with students that have life-threatening food allergies, including nurses, counselors, teachers, teachers and administrators; 2) procedures for responding to life-threatening reactions to food; 3) a process for implementing individualized health care and food allergy action plans and 4) protocols for preventing exposure to food allergens. Each school board will have to implement a policy based on the guidelines that emanate from this committee no later than Jan 1, 2011.
Gone will be the days of single-handedly educating and training school personnel who interact with your food allergic child. Starting in 2011, all Illinois school personnel will have training, so everyone will know their role. This is good news too for Many congratulations to the House Sponsors, FAI, FAAN, POCA of DuPage County, Kellee Konieczny, E. Garrow-Majika, Kristin Miller, the Bunnings, and countless indefatigable food allergy advocates everywhere.
If your child has ever had a life-threatening allergic reaction at school that could been handled better, or if, as a school administrator, you have ideas on how to accommodate food allergic children, you have a voice on this committee. Please give us your ideas (shelly@freefrommarket.com).
