Good News! Schools to Get Universal Food Allergy Training
Help is on the way in managing your child’s food allergies in school. Shelly DeRousse, co-founder of POCHA, s/w Cook and co-owner of Free From Market, will serve on a distinguished group of food allergy advocates, school and public health administrators to develop food allergy protocols that all Illinois Schools will follow beginning in 2011. The guidelines are mandated as part of a law that passed the IL legislature in August, 2009 (HB 281). It will require: 1) education and training for school personnel who interact with students that have life-threatening food allergies, including nurses, counselors, teachers, teachers and administrators; 2) procedures for responding to life-threatening reactions to food; 3) a process for implementing individualized health care and food allergy action plans and 4) protocols for preventing exposure to food allergens. Each school board will have to implement a policy based on the guidelines that emanate from this committee no later than Jan 1, 2011.
Gone will be the days of single-handedly educating and training the school personnel who interact with your food allergic child. Starting in 2011, all school personnel will have training, so everyone will know their role. Many congratulations belong to FAI, POCA of DuPage County, K. Konieczny, K. Miller, the Bunnings, other food allergy advocates, and of course to Shelly.
If your child has ever had a life-threatening food-allergy experience at school that could been handled better, or if as a school administrator you have ideas on how to best accommodate food allergic children, you have a friend on this committee. Please give us your ideas (shelly@freefrommarket.com)
