New Study Finds 4% of U.S. Children have Food Allergies
A new study by the National Center for Health Statistics published in this month’s edition of Pediatrics has found that food allergies among U.S. children, age 0-18 has risen 18% between 1997 and 2007. The study was based on data collected from a mixture of self-reported and doctor reported records: the National Health Interview Survey, the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey and National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, the National Hospital Discharge Survey. The rise in food allergy may have something to do with greater awareness, however, data collected from the health-care sector directly corroborated that which came from patients, suggesting that the rise is real and not due to increased diagnosis. The study also showed that in 2007, 29% of children with food allergy also reported asthma.
New Evidence to Support the Hygiene Hypothesis
Researchers from the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, have found that a common species of bacteria, staphylococci, which live on the skin help to dampen inflammatory immune response when we get hurt. By studying mice and human cells, researchers found that the otherwise harmless bacteria did this by producing a molecule called lipoteichoic acid, which helps to dampen the immune response of keratinocytes, a common cell type found in the outer layer of the skin. By understanding the role that these good bacteria play in modulating the immune system, researchers have potentially discovered a molecular basis for validating the so-called “hygiene hypothesis,” the idea that inflammatory immune diseases like allergy are on the rise in industrialized countries, because rising standards in hygiene have killed off beneficial bacteria. The research was published in the online journal Nature.
