Why Some Do not Develop Asthma
Researchers at the GIGA Research Center at the University of Liege believe they have discovered what prevents asthma from affecting roughly 60% of the world’s industrialized population: a previously uncharacterized cell population called lung interstitial macrophages. In mice, these cells can detect airborne antigens and prevent mounting a Th2 response. Moreover, in vivo elimination of lung interstitial macrophages led to developing asthmatic reactions to otherwise innocuous airborne antigens. The study sharpens the focus for future research on these cells for understanding why some people develop allergic asthma and others do not. The researchers hypothesize that asthma develops because these cells are deficient. One can read about the study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Why Some Do Develop Asthma and Allergy
Meanwhile researchers at the University of Texas believe that they have discovered the physiological switch that directs immune cells to develop the capacity to produce an allergic response. The critical molecule is called thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and is, according to an article published this month in Science Signaling, the key to development of any allergic disease from asthma to eczema to food allergy. Using blood from non-allergic donors, researchers found that when TSLP bound to dendritic cells (immune cells that initiate an allergic response) they activated messenger molecules that influenced T cells to develop into Th2 cells, which are well known drivers of allergic response. Previous to this study, it was unknown how Th2 cells became activated in this way, thus TSLP is the “switch” that causes individuals to develop the capacity for allergic response. An earlier article The molecule may be a potential target for a therapeutic agent to prevent allergic disease from ever occurring. One can read about it in Science Signaling.
