Asthma & Temperature / Humidity Changes
Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit have found that temperature and humidity changes exacerbate asthma symptoms. The researchers examined the medical records of 25,000 children who visited the ER from 2004-5. Patients were generally aware that weather fluctuations influenced their symptoms, but this is the first study to scientifically document the effect by excluding other factors such as pollution and pollen counts. The results of the study appear in the most recent edition of Annals of Allergy Asthma and Immunology. As a fall precaution, beware of the first dip below 50c.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids (DHA & EPA)
Here is the the short and sweet version explanation for why Omega-3 Fatty Acids are particularly important for those on restricted diets.
The average North American diet is particularly low in Omega-3 fatty acids consisting of DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and it is almost non-extant in those who exclude foods like dairy, eggs or fish. DHA is required in high levels in the brain and retna as an essential nutrient for optimal learning/memory ability and visual acuity. It has also been shown in clinical trials to reduce cardiovascular disease, inflamation and ameliorate other chronic conditions. According to the American Heart Association, the typical North American diet offers on average just 100-200 mg/day of the recommended 900 mg/day of DHA/EPA for adults and is extremely low among 3 year olds at a mere 19mg/day. The World Health Organization recommends higher targets and the Food and Nutrition Board still higher targets of 1300-2000mg/day on the basis of a 2000 calorie/day diet. This is approximately 10 times the current intake of EPA+DHA among North American adults.
Although the body can make DHA/EPA from ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) which is found in abundance in flax and soybean oils, no more than 15% results from conversion and the percentage is less in men. The best way to get sufficient DHA and EPA is to consume it directly in the form of fish. Unfortunately, mercury, PCBs and dioxins are a concern for game fish (swordfish, mackerel), which store these contaminates in significant amounts within their skin, fat and muscle, so fish oil supplements from reputable brands that harvest from deep water small fish and filter for impurities are ideal. The taste of fish oil supplements have improved dramatically in the past years.
